Phish covers

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

5 more episodes of Alias, and Meghan & I will have finished the third season! Whooooo!!!

Totally random idea for tonight: a compilation of Phish covers (something Reuben asked me to compile for him years ago, and I never got around to, until now!)

There are all songs originally written by other artists that Phish played on the dates listed. A lot of them are one-offs, but ‘Good Times Bad Times’, ‘La Grange’, and ‘Freebird’ (an a capella version) were often played during early 90′s Phish shows quite a bit. Most of these are from summer tour ’98 because, well, Phish played a lot of one-off covers during that tour. On of the more interesting that isn’t on this compilation (because I don’t have a copy of the show) is Pavement’s ‘Gold Soundz’.
I’m working on a second volume to include ‘Ramble On’ (Led Zeppelin), ‘Emotional Rescue’ (Rolling Stones), ‘Loving Cup’ (Rolling Stones), and whatever else I can find. :^)

Bowling, Sandy’s, and more movies

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

Last night Meghan & I went bowling. Meghan claims she’s a crappy bowler, but don’t let her fool you. She beat me the second game, and the only reason she didn’t win the first is because I happened to get three strikes in a row in the ninth and tenth frame (and I didn’t win by much). I’m not that great of a bowler, but I like think I’m a tiny bit above average anyway.
Can I say again that Meghan is awesome? Her sweetness amazes me on almost a daily basis. Last night while bowling, she kept clapping after every shot I bowled the ball down the lane. A lot of the shots were crappy, and I thought at first that she was making fun of me, but as it turns out, she was just trying to encourage me and let me know she thinks I’m a good bowler.
Bah, I sound cheezy.
Anyway, bowling only took an hour, and I hadn’t really thought ahead, so we kind of were at a loss of what to do. Meghan came up with the idea to go this little dingy bar by her place. So, here’s another bar review:
Sandy’s (on Penn Ave, somewhere by 69th St)
It’s a converted house, set up as a small bar and grill. The grill part wasn’t obvious to me at first, but Meghan pointed out the booths and the signed, which I had just been reading, which was promoting some award for good burgers.
When we walked in, Metallica was playing on the jukebox, and there were a total of maybe 7 other people in the bar. There was no sign of a bartender at first, because the bartender(s) were sitting at the bar.
Basically, what I’m saying is this a very “regulars” kind of bar. This was a Friday night, prime bar time (11pm), and the only people there were who I thought were friends of the owners. I don’t recall anyone looking at us weird, and I never got the feeling we were unwelcome, but I did get the sense that it was a sort of odd thing at Sandy’s for a couple to walk in off the street. The people seemed friendly, but they were talking about us when we left (I’m not assuming this; Meghan heard them as we were walking out).
The most interesting thing about Sandy’s to me (besides the odd comfort I felt in being there) was the jukebox. After the one Metallica song that was playing when we walked in, there were a couple Willie Nelson songs, and then the jukebox was quiet. I took it upon myself to put a few songs in (in case you didn’t know, music is kind of my thing). I chose the Sublime version of ‘Scarlet Begonias’, because I thought it would be something Meghan would recognize and enjoy; as it turns out, it drew approval from quite a few of the other patrons, as well. I also played ‘All Apologies’ (Nirvana), ‘Up On Cripple Creek’ (The Band), and I tried to play ‘Waving My Dick In The Wind’ (Ween), but for some reason the jukebox played ‘I’m Dancing In The Show Tonight’ instead. Perhaps ‘Waving…” was censored.
Oh… the point about the jukebox is that most of it is filled with country music and Top 40 compilations, but for some reason 40oz To Freedom and The Mollusk are in it. It reminded me of the Emma’s jukebox (although Emma’s has much less country). I ended up putting another dollar in the jukebox (somebody should really do a remake of that Joan Jett song…), but all I remember playing was another song from Mollusk. The other three are a bit of blur.
Anyway, Sandy’s is a neat little place. It’d be interesting to see what it’s like when there’s actually some other customers around. I want to go back and try one of their apparently famous burgers as well. I should remember to ask Meghan to check into when their peak hours are. Heh heh.

Today, so far, has pretty much been devoted to getting laundry done, and other random cleaning. I meant to do more cleaning that I actually did, but oh well. I got a little distracted this morning making biscuits, so I could enjoy some tasty bacon, egg & cheese biscuits. The biscuits from scratch turned out to be tiny, so I ended up with 4 mini BE&C biscuits. I should’ve taken a picture… they were cute.
Other than that I watched ‘Big Fish’, ‘How To Irritate People’ (a 1968 John Cleese *movie*.. might’ve been a TV special), and ‘Saved!’.
‘Big Fish’ was good… pretty much exactly what I expected. I got a little distracted reading the paper while I was watching it.
‘How To Irritate people’ was basically an extra-long Monty Python’s Fly Circus episode centered on John Cleese.
‘Saved!’ was a lot better than I would have thought. I remember deciding to watch it late one night, but I think I actually meant the one that has Steve Martin as a preacher… when I started watching ‘Saved!’ this morning, I was confused to see Mandy Moore and Machauly Culkin listed… but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Teen dramedy with a Christian twist. It points out a lot of the inconsistencies involved when people get too into the details of organized religion, but without calling anybody an idiot or anything. Good stuff.

Apparently, The Passion comes out on DVD this week; I’ll have to give it a look… even though I’m pretty sure it’s going to piss me off. Oh well.

Hmmm… I think my pot pie is almost done.

When did I become such a dullard?

It’s Friday afternoon, 4:26pm. I’m bored. I shouldn’t complain that there are no calls coming in, and I’m not gonna. I will complain, however, that there’s still over an hour left of work, because they ain’t shit anybody can do about that.

I like typing like a redneck.

I miss playing in the Big Rock Show. Jabberwocky hasn’t had a gig since June. That’s far too long. Summer’s like that, though.

I didn’t get to do any disc golf this week. The weather’s been pretty crappy.

Huh. Look at that; I just missed a call. Whoops.

Tonight I’m thinking I’m going to clean my car and my apartment. I feel a need to accomplish something. It’s weird because I feel like I’ve been running around like a cliche with it’s head cut off all week, but i haven’t accomplished a damn thing. Well, other than band practice; I suppose that counts. I don’t really know what I’m expecting to have accomplished, but it seems like there should be something.
I don’t have any other plans for the weekend. The State Fair has begun, and I’m sort of interested in going (mainly because I’ve avoided it for so long, and it seems like people have fun there, and I know a fun person who I would probably have fun there with), but since I haven’t been there in so long, I have no idea what the procedure is. (I off and on fear the unknown–I’m weird.)

Needless to say, I’m quite happy the work week is over.
