Weekend Update: Anniversary Edition

Monday, September 28th, 2009

This weekend was Meghan & I’s first wedding anniversary.  The year has blown by really fast, and while it’s definitely had its ups and downs, Meghan has made it a great year for me, and I couldn’t be happier.

Friday night, we decided to go out to dinner because we didn’t feel like cooking.  We went to Granite City Food & Brewery, due to its convenience, and beer.  Meghan had fish and chips (she was jealous of my earlier outting to Kip’s for lunch) and I had a chicken wrap.  Meghan ended up sending her fish back because it was cold when it got to the table.  We decided to order dessert as well, since we were celebrating, but as it turned out, they didn’t have any of our chosen dessert in stock.  As a result, we ended up getting a different dessert free of charge.  Woooo!

Saturday I woke up to find that Meghan had gone out and gotten coffee and apple fritters, and after enjoying our breakfast in front of the TV, we decided to start work on decorating our newly painted family room.  Meghan had printed out (like 4 years ago), some photos she took on a couple trips to Duluth in 2004, so we decided to go buy frames at Ikea.  Normally, we would buy the simple black frames, but the particular size and matting combination we were looking for was apparently out of stock in black.  So we ended up with white frames instead.  As it turns out, I think that was the better choice anyway.

After Ikea, we attempted to run another errand, but the place Meghan needed to go was closed, so we went to Best Buy instead.  I’d been wanting to buy a new receiver for a while, since the one we’ve been using cuts out the right speaker at random, and doesn’t have any digital inputs (HDMI, component, etc).  I had found a Sony receiver that seemed to have everything I was looking for, and I had a couple Best Buy gift certificates from my birthday.  We bought the new receiver and went home to set it up.

After setting it up, I learned a couple things:  HDMI pass-through is stupid, and this receiver wasn’t exactly what I wanted*.

Saturday night was our planned anniversary dinner (even though it was technically the night before our anniversary), and Meghan had made reservations at Loring Kitchen & Bar.  So we got ourselves fancified and went to dinner.  The restaurant was nice and we got to sit outside, which made for a romantic setting, so that was nice.  We ordered appetizers (Calamari and Grilled Chorizo Meat Loaf), which is rare for us.  I especially enjoyed the meat loaf.  For dinner, Meghan had the Cracker Crusted Walleye (fish again ??) and I had the Hanger Steak, which, after reading the Wikipedia article, now freaks me out a little.  It was tasty, though.  For some reason, they brought me two steak knives to eat a steak that was already cut when they brought it to the table.  We also had a side of “Fat Tire mac & cheese” which as it turns out was actually rigatoni in cheese sauce (apparently made with Fat Tire?).  It was good, but not exactly what I was expecting.

All-in-all, dinner was good.  We took our time and enjoyed being in the romantic atmosphere.

On the morning of our actual anniversary, I made us french toast for breakfast and we exchanged cards and gifts (“paper” anniversary-Meghan gave me a couple books, including The Zombie Survival Guide, which is basically the awesomest thing ever;).  After breakfast, we hung up the frames we had bought the day before:

Hanging photos involves math, which is what makes it fun.

Hanging photos involves math, which is what makes it fun.

Then it was time to watch the football game, which as we all know, was an exciting one.

Around halftime, I decided we should try out the “anniversary beer”, which was a Belgian Trippel I had brewed over a year ago, with the intention of opening and drinking for the first time on our anniversary.  I came up with this idea because in the instructions for brewing the Belgian Trippel, it suggests that the beer would benefit from aging for 6 months or so in the secondary fermenter.  It failed to mention that that length of time in the fermenter will likely cause the yeast to go dormant and settle hard to the bottom.  So by the time you bottle it, hardly any yeast gets into the bottle.  As a result, even though I bottled the beer two months ago, our anniversary beer was barely carbonated and tasted a bit sugary.  We took a couple sips and that was about it.  Ah well.  I’ll shake up the bottles and hopefully given more time, at least some of them will carbonate properly.

After the game was over, we decided to celebrate with cake.  We had saved the top of our wedding cake, as it custom.  Unfortunately, I didn’t read the directions when I put it in the freezer and had just put the box in the freezer.  Apparently, we were supposed to have wrapped it after it was frozen and definitely not have frozen it in the box.  Luckily, since it was encased in fondant, the cake inside was still delicious.  I tasted some of the frosting on the outside of the cake and it was kind of nasty, but everything contained within the fondant was perfectly preserved and delicious.  Still the best cake I’ve ever had.

After that, Meghan had to make some calls relating to her friend Naomi’s bachelorette party, so I continued reading the new Dan Brown book**.   The rest of the day went as most Sundays do.  Watched TV, had leftover tacos for dinner, went to bed early.

* – I decided I’m going to return the new receiver and get a different one.  Apparently, since this one just passes through the HDMI signal, you still need to hook up audio to the receiver separately, which in my mind, negates the whole purpose of HDMI.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

** – The Lost Symbol, which is basically The Davinci Code, with every reference to the Holy Grail replaced with ‘Ancient Mysteries’ and any mention of Christians replaced with Masons.  Still, it’s a fun read.

PSA: Painting wood paneling sucks

Monday, September 21st, 2009

This weekend was devoted to painting the paneling in our family room.  This was something we’ve planned on doing ever since moving into the house, but it seemed like such a daunting task, we didn’t get around to it until this weekend.  We originally planned on hiring someone to do it for us, but after two years of procrastinating and watching roughly two thousand hours of HGTV, we decided we could probably just do it ourselves.

So Friday night, we headed out to Home Depot and bought the paint and supplies.  We got home and got to work.  It took us roughly two hours just to get the room ready to paint, taking off all of the faceplates, moving the furniture, and taping.  By around 9pm, we had the room ready to go.

It was important that we could still watch TV at a moments notice.

It was important that we could still watch TV at a moment's notice.

We started painting on the primer using the rollers to see if it would be possible to avoid having to paint all of the grooves individually.  As it turns out, it wasn’t.  Ugh.  So we got to work going around the room painting each indivivual groove and by a little after 11, we had most of the grooves done up to the point we could reach without using a stool.

We considered just leaving it like this, but were afraid that lions might try to eat the room.

We considered just leaving it like this, but were afraid that lions might try to eat the room.

At that point, we decided to call it a night, since we knew that no matter what, we’d have a long day of painting on Saturday.  It turned out that one gallon of primer wasn’t quite enough to cover the whole room either, so we knew we’d have to go buy more paint.

So Saturday morning, we got up and headed off to get some breakfast and take another trip to Home Depot to pick up more paint.  We were painting again by around 11am and had the rest of the grooves painted by 12:30 pm.  It took maybe another hour to roll on the rest of the primer.  At that point, we had to let the primer dry before doing anything else, so we watched America’s Next Top Model and tried to resist the urge to take a nap.

Once the primer was reasonably dry, we got to work on the daunting task of once again painting every single groove in the paneling.  We had a short break in the form of my sister stopping by to pick up some bins she had been storing in our basement, but it wasn’t long before we were painting again.  By around 5:30 we had all of the grooves up to where we could reach painted again, and decided to power through and finish off the groove-painting before dinner.

The walls, they bleed.

The walls, they bleed.

Towards the end of painting the top grooves, it was getting really difficult to lift my arms above my head and I started to feel a bit woozy.  So we ordered Thanh Do for dinner watched Project Runway while the paint dried.  I was glad for the break.

After dinner, we finished off the top coat with the rollers and were done for the day around 8pm.  We spent the rest of the night watching TV.  After Meghan went to bed, I decided to come back downstairs and watch Fringe (which was awesome).  While watching it, I heard one of the cats pawing at the plastic behind the couch and went to shoo him away from it, only to find Ace had peed on it and was trying to cover it up.  (Stupid cat!)  It smelled nasty, so I decided that piece of plastic was done and rolled it up and threw it away.  (Stupid cat!)

By Sunday morning, neither Meghan or I were very motivated to paint anymore.  I desperately wanted to just touch up the really bad parts and be done with it, but Meghan insisted we do a complete second coat.  Eventually I agreed and, after a run to Burger King for breakfast, where we were served by The Stupidest Person On The Planet, we got to work.  Luckily, we didn’t need to paint the grooves again, just do the edging and roll on another coat.  Even so, being as sore as I was, this seemed like the most hellish torture known to man.

My goal was to get all of the painting done by noon, so I could watch the Vikings game, and we did pretty good.  We finished the second coat at 12:30 and decided to watch the game while the paint dried.  The Vikings won, and by 4:30, the room was completely done and put back together.

Hooray!

Hooray!

The color (“Mochachino”) is interesting, because when we got the first coat on, I thought it looked really green.  But when we did the second coat, it didn’t look green at all.  Now sometimes when I look it, it seems green, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Soon after finishing up, we got calls from  both Meghan’s friend Naomi and Meghan’s sister, saying they were going to be stopping by (for completely unrelated reasons), so we got to show off the room while we had an impromptu mini-party, which was fun.

I ended up falling asleep around 10:30pm (a rarity for me), completely exhausted from the weekend.  I woke up this morning and was still a bit dazed and had to postpone a 9:30 meeting because I couldn’t get my brain to work.

So yeah, we’ve decided if we ever want to change the color, we just going to hire somebody to paint that room.

We still plan on painting all of the the trim in the house white, though.  So you have that blog to look forward to.
