Television

Damn you, back!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

As much as I like laying on the couch being phenomenally lazy, this shit is starting to get old.
It’s been about a week and a half now since I managed to pull something in my back. I seem to do this about once a year. This time has actually been fairly mild compared to the last time, but it still sucks. Last time I had a hard time sleeping because of the pain. This time, it’s just really uncomfortable sitting in my office chair for longer than an hour, and standing for longer than 20 minutes or so.
This weekend, my wife & I spent a good 7 hours in one day laying on the couch watching TV. We watched the season thus far of Leverage (an entertaining, if slightly ridiculous show), as well as clearing out our TiVo, including Another Cinderella Story… so… yeah. Up yours, back!

Anyway, I’ve decided to finally start watching Battlestar Galactica. Well, start watching it again. I started watching the first season a couple years ago, but lost interest at some point (I KNOW, I’M A NERD SO I’M SUPPOSED TO LOVE IT, but so far, I don’t).
Right now, the problem is that I can’t remember where exactly I left off, so I figured the best idea was to start over from the beginning of the first season.
So, yeah, I don’t love it. I’m hoping it gets better after the first season, but so far, the cinematography kind of bugs me, and the individual episode stories haven’t been great. I am enjoying the overall story arc, but the episode where they have to search for water = boring, and the episode where they have to get the prisoners to help them search for water = boring, and the episode where there’s an accident and the writers use the deaths as an excuse to give us backstory on the characters = boring. Yeah, I think I found where I lost interest.
But, everybody says it’s awesome, so I’m sure it’s awesome.
In a more general sense, something about it reminds me of Star Trek: TNG (I have no idea why), and that bugs me. And there’s a lot of zooming and hand-held camera work. Which would be fine if it was a horror movie we were talking about, but it’s not a horror movie.
I think I’d be happier if there were more fights with awesome robots and less character-driven drama. Maybe I should time travel to the 70’s.

In other news…
Umm…

Damn you, back!

Phish covers

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

5 more episodes of Alias, and Meghan & I will have finished the third season! Whooooo!!!

Totally random idea for tonight: a compilation of Phish covers (something Reuben asked me to compile for him years ago, and I never got around to, until now!)

There are all songs originally written by other artists that Phish played on the dates listed. A lot of them are one-offs, but ‘Good Times Bad Times’, ‘La Grange’, and ‘Freebird’ (an a capella version) were often played during early 90′s Phish shows quite a bit. Most of these are from summer tour ’98 because, well, Phish played a lot of one-off covers during that tour. On of the more interesting that isn’t on this compilation (because I don’t have a copy of the show) is Pavement’s ‘Gold Soundz’.
I’m working on a second volume to include ‘Ramble On’ (Led Zeppelin), ‘Emotional Rescue’ (Rolling Stones), ‘Loving Cup’ (Rolling Stones), and whatever else I can find. :^)

I don’t watch a lot of television.

Monday, July 26th, 2004

Well, I watch a lot of television shows… i.e. Mystery Science Theater 3000… but, I don’t sit down and watch television (you know, the kind you watch on a TV, via cable, antenna, satellite dish or whatever) hardly ever.
At least… I hadn’t for the last 5 months or so.
Last night, I sat down and watched a solid 5 hours of TV for the first time in a long time.
The results follow.

The Simpsons
I go back in forth in my opinion on whether the Simpsons should call it quits or not. Everytime I watch a new episode when it’s new on TV, it disappoints me.
For some reason, though, if I watch the same episode months later, it seems hilarious. That’s weird. I don’t remember which episode was on last night. But I remember it was funny.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
This show just rocks.
And I’m aware that an odd thing for a guy to say about a home improvement show, but Ty Peddington is hilarious, and this show actually does good charitable work, besides just being entertaining.

The Days
I’d never heard of this show before yesterday. It’s a nice family drama. Nothing to edgy about it; nothing groundbreaking; nothing new. But it’s well-done and entertaining.

E.R.
I found a re-run of E.R. on somewhere from back in the days when George Clooney was still on the show. I always enjoy E.R. when I see it, but not enough that I feel the need to watch it every week.

The West Wing
Also a re-run; this show is awesome. This is a show that I’d like to watch every week, but my life isn’t so ordered and routine that I can consistently be home the same night of any given week. (although Wednesdays & Sundays are a good bet)

Did I have a point? No.
It felt good to watch TV, and it served as a good primer for testing out my new furniture arrangement.
I like it.
