Garage Sale, Day 1

We started selling stuff in our driveway today.  Meghan came up with the idea to do so last summer as a way to raise money to support her sister walking in the Breast Cancer 3 Day, but last summer we were too busy planning our wedding to actually have a garage sale.  We almost forgot to have it again this year, but my sister was all over it, putting price stickers on her stuff and leaving it at our house for the last couple months.

Originally, I was not so enthusiastic about the idea of having random strangers walking around in my driveway, but after spending today watching people buy little pieces of my life, I have to say it actually pretty fun.  It’s simply astounding what people will buy when the price is right.  My best example of this is one of my neighbors, who came over and perused pretty much every shelf before deciding on one item to purchase:  a wooden banana-hanger.

Other highlights of the day included the 4-year-old granddaughter of the neighbor coming back every 10 minutes begging to buy something and not having enough money*, the guy who early on came by and bought up basically every CD there was and several movies, the woman who bought over a dozen of my sister’s Disney VHS tapes and claiming it was one of the best garage sales finds of all time**, the random people who kept parking their cars, walking up and very quickly scanning everything and promptyly leaving…  it was interesting to watch.  And of course other highlights were T-Rav coming by and hanging out for a while and Ben & Kerry coming by during their lunch break.

OMG AND BOARD GAME GUY!  Right after Meghan posted the ad on Craiglist about having the garage sale she got an e-mail from some guy asking what games we were selling.  She didn’t e-mail him back.  So then today bronze Mustang blaring Shinedown drove up and this guy who looked like one of the Icy Hot Stuntaz got out and Meghan immediately knew it was the board game guy.  Sure enough he got up and, after a quick glance around, fixated on the two board games we had for sale.  He bought Golf Scrabble for $1.

I’m really looking forward to what sort of weirdness tomorrow brings.  LOL

* – This girl is an entire blog post’s worth of story in herself:  first she had a dollar.  She spent it and came back with 50 cents.  She spent that and came back with a quarter.  She spent that and came back with 3 dimes.  She spent that and came back with three pennies.  Then we told her she didn’t have enough money to buy anything.  She pouted and very slowly dropped each penny on the ground one at a time and then finally stomped off to her house.  Then she came back with a nickel and we had to inform her again she didn’t have enough money.  She then slammed that nickel down on the one of the tables and stormed off again, claiming she was going to bring back everything she had purchased, as if that would be some kind of punishment for not selling her something.  Then she came back with a copper coin that looked like it might have been 5 pesos.  It turned out to be a Chucky Cheese coin.  I think it was my sister who told her that money only works at Chucky Cheese.  She then informed us that she would come back with dollars once her poppa wasn’t looking.  Then next time she came back….  with his social security card.  And then she tried to give Meghan a hug…  ooogh, bad move kid.

** – I may be exaggerating.  She was excited, though.
